Monitoring the reproduction of other psittacines

All the nestlings of blue-fronted amazon fledged last month and left the nests, as their reproductive season came to an end. So this month we focused on monitoring the reproduction of two other psittacine species: the nanday parakeet (Aratinga nenday) and the blue-crowned parakeet (Thectocercus acuticaudatus.

Many of the nests of these species are very hard to gain access to, as the entrance of the nest cavity are very small.

Feather samples were collected from the nestling for future DNA testing and sexing.

Besides that, we also did the routine activities of the Project, such as searching for new nests and observation of the behavior and activities of many psittacine species.

During this field trip we had a surprise: we found a dead snake incide a nest of nanday parakeet! One of our hypothesis is that the snake tried to feed on the nestlings, and the brave parents killed it!!!

Another great surprise was the encounter with an amazing jaguar during our morning work! It was incredible!!! The Pantanal is still gorgeous, with its unique beauty and surprises! 🙂

Dear friends, we are very happy to share with this great news with you!!

We have just received another donation for the Project – a brand new compact digital camera (it was one of the items in our Wish List)!! The donation came all the way from the UK, from one of our followers, Coll. And it came just in time – we were in need of a new camera to monitor the nests this breeding season, as our old one stopped working some time ago.

A photographer in the field

Dear friends,

earlier this month we had a special visit in one of our field trips! Victor Moriyama is a photographer (Revista Horizonte Geográfico), and he came along with us to check on the birds. Check out some of the amazing pictures he took! 🙂

Sadly, this is also the part of the year where the illegal animal trade of Blue-fronted Amazon is more intense… 😦 This makes us so upset… and gives us even more will to keep fighting for these birds and the Pantanal! If this also upsets you, please share this post with all your friends in your social media! The more we are, the more we can do for them!

“On the wings of the wind” visits rural schools in Campo Grande!

On the 20th and 21st of October, the Blue-fronted Amazon Project/Econs started visiting urban schools in Campo Grande – Mato Grosso do Sul. A total of 310 children and teens had the chance to see our puppet theatre “On the wings of the wind”. They were from two different schools, the Polo Agrícola Governados Arnaldo Estevão de Figueredo and the Polo Isauro Bento Nogueira.

In both occasions, Larissa Lopes/Cia das Artes told them the story of the Manuel-Verdadeiro (our main puppet character! 🙂 ), made dolls out of tree branches, and played with them traditional plays. Both kids and teachers welcomed all the activities and happily took part on them. The presentations will continue until the end of this year, until ALL the rural schools in Campo Grande are visited! And next year, will be the turn for the urban schools! So keep following us!

Presenting our puppet theater to children in need at Bonito

Since 2013, our puppet play “On the wings of the wind” has been bringing happiness to many children in Mato Grosso do Sul State! This time it was at Bonito, with presentation at different locations during the Bonito’s Bird Week (6 to 10 of October), promoted by the Secretaria Municipal de Meio Ambiente along with the Neotropical Foundation of Brazil and local partners.

During this week, the play was also presented to the non-profit organizations that care for children in need at Bonito. We first visited the Instituto Internacional Visão de Vida (Blog and Facebook), where about 100 kids and teens, from 6 to 18 years, watched the play along with their teachers and mentors.

Lastly, we visited the Fundação Vida Bonito – Casa da Criança, where seven children that live there had the opportunity to watch the pupper theater, play together and colour our mascot “lorito” (which means little parrot), kindly created by the artist and friend of the Project, Ronald Rosa.

Keep following our awareness campaign with kids and teens! We aim to enlighten their day while sharing info about the Blue-fronted Amazons, and we believe everyone can be an allied for the conservation!

1st Bonito Bird Week

The Blue-fronted Amazon Project took part on the 1st Bonito Bird Week, with our puppet theatre and our photo exhibition! The event was done by the local Department of Environment, in partnership with the Neotropical Foudnation of Brazil, ICMBio and IASB.
The participation of the  community was vital for this event, whose objective was to raise public awareness for the preservation of the birds and their importance to the environment.
